Richard P. Cook RBA
I work in watercolour or oils mostly, usually on landscapes and architectural subjects as well as comissioned portraits or paintings of family and friends. I enjoy painting abroad particularly in Italy France and Spain for the often dramatic scenery and buildings. The English landscape too, is always a fascinating source of inspiration the weather and light a challenge to capture atmospheric changes quickly. Seeing a view or person for the first time is always exciting. Trying to find an equivalent for that sense of surprise and the intriguing collection of abstract shapes, colours and tones is what starts me painting.
In portrait painting there is an additional bonus, which is the personality and psychological qualities of the sitter. These have to be suggested, or hinted at, along with the physical likeness, in a way that is revealing as well as a positive experience for both the sitter and the artist.
I have exhibited in numerous mixed exhibitions including, the RBA, Royal Academy Summer Shows, New English, Laing Landscape, John Player Portrait Award Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. Royal Institute of Painters in watercolour, Royal society of Portrait Painters, Singer Friedlander/ Sunday Times Watercolour Exhibitions, (inc 2008) and many commercial galleries. I exhibited and demonstrated painting at Art in Action, Oxfordshire for several years. Work is represented in collections here and abroad. Enquiries for commissioned work in, portrait or equestrian, houses - architectural or favourite landscape views are always welcome.
