Working primarily in oils and watercolour, Richard draws inspiration from the sense of excitement he feels on discovering a breathtaking new view. Tying "to find an equivalent for that sense of surprise through the intriguing collection of abstract shapes, colours and tones" is what starts him painting. His landscapes are varied, snapshots of a moment in time and travel, though often include marine and maritime themes.
Portraiture has an additional bonus as it is able to so wonderfully reveal the personality of the sitter. Richard believes this is as important as conveying a physical likeness, with hints of character coming through each commission he takes on.
He studied at Royal Academy Schools, London, Maidstone College of Art and Grimsby College of Art
Richard exhibits regularly with examples of past exhibitions including the RBA; Royal Academy Summer Shows; New English; Laing Landscape; John Player Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery; Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour; Royal Society of Portrait Painters; Singer Friedlander/Sunday Times Watercolour Exhibitions.
